So you've bought your first drum kit, look after it! Make sure all the screws and fittings are tight otherwise they will not support the weight correctly and could crack. Its good to change the skins on a drum every now and again, old skins affect the sound and feel of a drum. Older the skin the less of a crisp sound you will get. Clean cymbals carefully with specially made cymbal cleaner. Fingers and cymbals don't mix, try and keep you fingers to the edge of a cymbal other wise the grease and moisture on your hands will discolour the cymbal (green.. aghh!). Last of all, cases. If your going to be on the move with your drums its good to buy cases to protect them from any knocks and bumps. Cases can be hard or soft depending on which you choose, either offer great protection.
